Trump Peace Plan is a Recipe for Increased Tensions, Not Peace
The National Council of Jewish Women reacts today to President Trump’s proposed peace plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. NCJW CEO Sheila Katz released the following statement:
“The National Council of Jewish Women envisions a democratic Jewish homeland of Israel side by side with a Palestinian state, where women, children, families, and all people can thrive while living in security and peace.
“While we appreciate the emphasis on creating a plan for peace, the Trump plan released yesterday is less a roadmap for peace and rather a green light to annexation in the West Bank without any regard to long-lasting peace in the region. Notably absent from this plan was a Palestinian voice to reflect an honest search for just solutions and respect for equal partnership.
“Instead, the Trump/Netanyahu vision is a unilateral plan that would allow Israel to carry out annexation and does not leave room for negotiation with the Palestinians. On first glance, its claim to affirm support for a Palestinian state is a welcome sign, yet it actually places onerous conditions on Palestinians that would prevent them from ever actualizing a recognizably sovereign state. At its heart the plan includes annexing most of the West Bank; the stripping of Israeli citizenship from hundreds of thousands of Palestinian citizens of Israel without their input and against their will; and calls for a Palestinian capital in an area that would be mostly outside of the large municipal boundaries of Jerusalem.
“Unfortunately, this plan won’t get us to our vision of a thriving and safe region. Israelis and Palestinians both deserve better prospects for their future. We fear annexation will perpetuate the ongoing cycles of violence for both Israelis and Palestinians.
“We are eager to be a partner in working alongside the administrations in the US and Israel as well as with both Palestinians and Israelis to help develop a real plan that will lead to peace in the region.”
