Appeals Court Nominee’s Calls for “Ethnonationalism” are Chilling and Disqualifying

August 20, 2019 – Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today expressed shock and disappointment in the views expressed by Steven Menashi, nominee to the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. NCJW CEO Sheila Katz released the following statement:

“As Jews, we are taught to love your neighbor as yourself. We are stunned and deeply disturbed by Steven Menashi’s calls for “ethnonationalism” and against “ethnic heterogeneity.” In these words, we hear haunting echoes of cries for a master race and racial purity. America’s democracy was built on huddled masses attracted to the promises of freedom and acceptance. At a time when white supremacy and domestic terrorism are rising, it is more important than ever to disavow any proponent of such intolerance and hate. Justice and equity require that the White House immediately withdraw Steven Menashi’s nomination to serve a lifetime appointment on the federal bench. Anything less is simply unacceptable and would cause irreversible damage to our democracy.”
