Dream and Promise Act Would Overturn Trump Policy and Enable Long-Time US Residents to Stay

March 12, 2019, Washington, DC – The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) is pleased to support HR 6, the DREAM and Promise Act, introduced today in the House of Representatives. For the first time in one piece of legislation, the bill provides a permanent solution for those brought here as children by their parents, known as Dreamers, and those with Temporary Protected Status and Deferred Enforced Departure status. NCJW CEO Nancy K. Kaufman released the following statement:

“For NCJW the mandate to treat immigrants of all kinds with compassion is part of our organizational and spiritual DNA. We are pleased to endorse the renewed effort in the House of Representatives to make permanent the policies of the Obama administration that protected those brought to the US as children by their parents as well as those granted temporary status to live in the US due to hardships created by natural disasters or armed conflicts.

“Those brought here as children typically remember no other home and speak only English. By now, the first minors granted reprieve have completed their education, served in the US armed forces, become employed, and started their own families. They number in the millions.

“Similarly, those who were granted temporary status or deferred departure status have lived and worked in the US for 20 years on average. They have made valuable contributions to the US, and like Dreamers, many have US citizen children or other family members.

“Expelling those who have had legal status here for decades without problems is short-sighted and cruel — a hallmark of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. When NCJW endorsed the Dream and Promise Act, we endorsed (again) an immigration system that affirms the sanctity of family unity, respects the rights and dignity of all, and makes the American Dream truly achievable. We have held up this ideal for more than a century, and we will continue to work to realize it.”
